Overview
Gambella National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most ecologically important and wildlife-rich protected areas, located in the western lowlands along the Baro, Akobo, and Gilo river systems near the border with South Sudan. The park is dominated by vast floodplains, open savannah, grasslands, and riverine forests, creating habitats similar to those of East Africa’s great migration ecosystems. Gambella is internationally significant for hosting one of the largest remaining populations of Nile lechwe in Africa and for supporting seasonal movements of large mammals. Its remote setting, expansive landscapes, and rich biodiversity make it a key conservation area and a promising safari destination for experienced travelers.

Wildlife & Animals
Gambella National Park supports some of the highest wildlife densities in Ethiopia, particularly during the dry season when animals concentrate around permanent rivers and wetlands. The park’s floodplain ecosystems sustain large populations of antelope, buffalo, and predators, making it one of the few places in the country where classic savannah-style wildlife viewing is possible. Seasonal migrations from South Sudan further enhance the park’s ecological value.
Wildlife Highlights
The massive herds of Nile lechwe grazing across open floodplains are the park’s defining highlight. Sightings of buffalo, giraffe, elephant, and large predators such as lion and leopard add to the sense of a truly wild and untamed African landscape.
Best Time for Wildlife Viewing
The best time for wildlife viewing is from January to March, when floodwaters recede and animals gather in large numbers near rivers and open grasslands.
