Bale Mountains National Park is the largest area of Afro-Alphine habitat in the whole of the continent. It gives the visitor opportunities for unsurpassed mountain walking, horse trekking, scenic driving and chances to view many of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, in particular the mountain Nyala and Semien Fox; and birds, such as the Thick-billed Raven, Wattled Ibis, Blue-winged Goose, Rouge’s Rail, etc.

    Drive to Bale Mountain

    Very early morning start driving to Bale Mountains National Park head quarter, traveling thorough the southeast part of the capital, where fertile land is cultivated by the Oromo people. In time for a walk around the park to see three of the endemic mammals: Menelik's Bushbuck, Semien Fox, and Mountain Nyala. And birds Blue-winged goose, Spot-breasted lapwing, Abyssinian long claw, Wattled ibis, Black-headed siskin, Rouget’s rail. Other mammals you can expect to see here are warthog, boor reedbuck, Gureza monkey, as well as several other water and grassland birds.

    Trek to Geysay Valley

    The whole day visit around Dinsho and Geysay Valley. Walk around and see more Birds Dinsho itself is an excellent spot for endemics- black-winged lovebird, white-backed black tit, Abyssinian catbird, Abyssinian salty flycatcher, thick-billed raven, white-collared pigeon is few to mention. The forest around Dinsho head quarter is characterized by light undergrowth, which allows for game viewing, and by the herby aroma of fallen hygiene leaves. An unusual plant of the Dinsho area is the white-flowered Abyssinian rose, the only flowering rose that is indigenous to Africa. The rest of the day arranges the trekking staff.

    Trek Dinsho to Sodota

    After breakfast, start the hike from Dinsho to Sodota. Today’s trekking will give a good chance to see the typical biodiversity: Mountain Nyala, Menelik Bush Buck, Warthog and the Ethiopian Wolf and different birdlife that you may spot, including the gigantic bearded vultures known as lammergeyers and the thick-billed raven, Wattled Ibis, blue-winged Goose and Rouget’s rail. Lunch at the mid-way point of the trekking. After enjoying the beautiful highlands fauna and flora we have dinner and overnight at the campsite in Sodota.

    Trek Sodota to Wasama Valley

    After breakfast, we resume trek that will last at Wasama camping area. Pass through Mararo Valley where the Lammergeyer and Verraux Eagles keep nests. The trek offers the chance to see Ethiopia's endemic Abyssinian Wolf. At this point in the trek, we begin to look for the Ethiopian Wolf, the rarest canid in the world and Africa’s most threatened carnivore. Ethiopian Wolves live in packs of between 2 and 18 numbers but there are solo hunters surviving primarily on a diet of rodents. Lunch at the mid-way point of the trekking. Beneath the peaks of Wasama valley see and taste the strange mineral springs (“hora” in Oromo) before making the steep ascent out of the head of the valley onto the Sanetti Plateau. Overnight camping at the base of Wasama Mountain.

    Trek Wasama to Gebre Guracha

    Today we trek through the highlands, crossing Batu Mountain on the way to Gebre Guracha- set beneath towering cliffs in the head of the Tegona valley. Lunch at the mid-way point of the trekking. Wild flowers abound, the dominant plant being the Helichrysm, or 'everlasting' flowers. The Everlasting plant can be seen in several forms, but the grey bushes of H. splendidum are the most striking with their yellow flowers. Several rodent species are found in the area. We climb Mount Wasama, situated at 4200 meters above sea level. The terrain around the mountain is dotted with colorful giant lobelia and other plants typical to the high altitude Afro-Alpine landscapes. Our walk will pass through high altitude plateau with amazing views and amazing clear alpine lakes.

    Trek to Sanetti Plateau and Drive to Goba

    After breakfast, we trek to the highest peak in the Bale Mountains, Tullu Deemtu (4377m, 14357ft) which is part of the Sanetti Plateau. The vistas are simply unbelievable and so photogenic. Here you will find small alpine lakes and typical afro-alpine vegetation that includes the Giant Lobelia and shrubs such as 'Everlasting'. Vistas reach out to the strange pinnacles of Chorchora Peak and across the sheer-sided Tegona River Gorge. There are views to the steep-sided volcanic plug of Konteh Tullu and the long, craggy ridges of Mount Batu. Highland birding includes the Abyssinian Catbird, Abyssinian Woodpecker, White-backed Black Tit, Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Yellow-crowned Canary, Somali Chestnut Winged Starling, Olive Pigeon and Mountain Buzzard. The vehicle will meet us here and drive us down to Goba town for an overnight stay.

    Drive Back to Addis Ababa

    An early morning start of our Ethiopian tour will see us depart this scenic area and head back over the Sanetti Plateau and drive to Addis Ababa. If time allows, we may make a quick visit to the Abiata-Shalla National Park en route. The twin lakes of Abiata (a shallow “wader” magnet) and Shalla (a deep volcanic caldera) form the Abiata-Shalla National Park, which covers a total area of 887km2, of which 482km2 is water, and act as an important feeding ground for enormous numbers of Afrotropical and Palaearcticwaterbirds. The vegetation surrounding the area is predominantly Acacia woodland, but sadly this has been extensively degraded through human encroachment. We then continue back up the Rift to Addis, where our incredible adventure sadly comes to an end. In the evening before departure, you will be invited a farewell dinner party at one of the best traditional restaurants in Addis where you taste variety of Ethiopian meals, and watch the folkloric dancers of the Ethiopian people. Getting There

Ethiopia, situated in the famous Horn of Africa, is known as both the Land of Origins and the Land of a Thousand Smiles. Most of the visitors arrive at the Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa. Usually, the Safari operator picks you up at the airport and takes care of any travel arrangements from there. If you are already in the region it’s possible to get in by land from Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti. It is best to stay away from the borders of South Sudan and Somalia. Drive-around tours are also available (especially in southern Ethiopia). Even when flying around, covering some distances by car can be very rewarding as you'll see some of the Ethiopian countrysides.
