Rwanda is a beautiful lush green, landlocked country in the heart of Africa, known as "the land of a thousand hills". This destination is rich in flora and fauna and has stunning natural beauty with its scenic rolling hills as far as the eyes can see. The country hosts many rare species of animals including numerous endemic species of birds, Akagera National Park, a great location for safari and Nyungwe, one of the oldest continuously forested locations in the world with its spectacular scenery and primate viewing. And on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes themselves, you can meet and walk amongst a family of endangered mountain gorillas. The pinnacle of wildlife experiences, to spend an hour in the company of a remarkably gentle silverback gorilla is an encounter unlike any other on Earth. But wherever you go, the warm, friendly people of Rwanda will make you welcome as they enjoy showing visitors their way of life, local traditions and community initiatives that are new opportunities for local people. Welcome to Rwanda.

1Golden Monkey Trekking and Canoeing
This morning your driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Volcanoes National Park. The journey is approximately 106 km and will take between 2 and 3 hours. Today you will head into the forest to track down an endangered species of monkey known as the Golden Monkey. Spend 1 hour watching monkey families play in the forest! This is a great introduction to wildlife, as the proceeds from tourist visits go towards research to protect these species and preserve the environment so they don’t become extinct. And if you love birds, be sure to ask your guides about the species you can spot along the trails. If you’re lucky, this could include the rather impressive Blue Turaco! Meet at Volcanoes National Park headquarters at 07:00, and at 08:00 you will set off on a trek through the forest and spend an hour with a troop of 40-100 playful golden monkeys that jump and run around the perimeter. This rare species is listed as endangered, and the park is currently home to two troops of about 80 monkeys, which are used to visiting tourists. You will go on a trek to find the golden monkeys in the same way as you would on a gorilla trek: a small group of no more than six people will spend an hour with the monkeys once you have spotted them. They are very energetic creatures, jumping from tree to tree, and it is fascinating to watch them in their daily life. . Discover this special way of travelling through the countryside in our modern canoes, located in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes! Admire the stunning views, watch for numerous birds, spot otters and meet friendly communities. Led by an experienced Kingfisher Journey organizer, this river is mostly very gentle and flat. In some sections it is short and easy, while in other sections the water flows quite fast . Musanze town centre is a 15 minute drive away (from Kinigi it’s about another 15 minutes). Here the activity leader will give you a briefing on the riverbank before you head out on the water. The first section is a nice and easy opportunity to learn how to handle a canoe, floating gently downstream. After about 20-30 minutes you’ll stop and have a short additional briefing on a small ramp where helmets are required. Then, heading deep into the countryside, you’ll be surrounded by the sights and sounds of rural Rwanda. You’ll also be told about a section of about 200 metres where the water speeds up as it rounds a few corners. After 2.5-3 hours on the water the trip ends just after the road bridge. The return to Musanze takes about 20 minutes and Kinigi is another 15 minutes. Dinner and overnight at Volcanoes of Tilorez Ecolodge
