Although wildlife is less active during the day, the afternoons are still good for spotting game and exploring the lowland plains, savannas, forests, wetlands and some of the dozens of lakes that make up this special place. In the afternoons, as the sun sets below the horizon, the animals and birds will come out again, and sunset often offers beautiful views of Zebra, giraffe, buffalo, topi and many impala are commonly seen here, as well as elephant, rhino, defassa waterbuck, roma antelope, eland, duiker, oribi, bogor reedbuck, klipspringer and bushbuck. For short trips around the southern part of Akagera, we recommend the Giraffe Circuit or Rurama Circuit. Passing Lake Birengero, you can visit the Kageyo Peninsula or, if you arrive early, the Nyampiki Peninsula on a round trip. It is also possible to do the entire Rwisirabo, Kitabili and Kajumbura circuit in under 3 hours, but this is quite a long drive, so for the best wildlife viewing, we recommend taking a day trip, There is no drinking water outside the lodges, so be sure to bring enough water for the trip. Please follow all park rules and regulations and do not park your vehicle except in designated camping or picnic areas. In the afternoon, enjoy a sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema. This is a great way to experience Akagera’s abundant wildlife. With an experienced and knowledgeable guide, you’ll motorboat to a nearby island and along the forest-fringed shores where you’ll be sure to see many species of birds. One can often see the famous African fish, cranes, crowned eagles, noisy colonies of cormorants, hippos, crocodiles, and sometimes elephants, antelopes and other herbivores. A long sunset drive is the perfect way to end the day as the sun sets behind the hills. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.
