Overview

The Selinda concession lies between the Okavango and Linyanti water systems, and it secures the Selinda Spillway which goes through the core of this tremendous reserve of pristine wilderness. It is a wonderful environment – tall palm trees look onto open prairies and riverine woodland. In the dry season, the game viewing is awesome. There are four exclusive, upmarket lodges to browse in the private Selinda Concession. The guiding is incredible, and activities incorporate game drives, night drives, walking and boating safaris. Wildlife viewing is excellent with most large safari creatures present aside from rhinos. The reserve is truly outstanding for wild dog sightings.

Wildlife & Animals

Selinda has an amazing resident game, including numerous antelope (roan, sable, giraffe, reedbuck and red lechwe) which are participated in June by huge groups of zebra and wildebeest. All the Big Five can be experienced here. It's an amazing reserve for cheetahs, spotted hyenas and large prides of lions. The region is famous for large groups of elephants that assemble around streams in the dry cold weather months.

Wildlife Highlights

Selinda has a few resident prides, a considerable lot of which number at least twenty and are regularly tracked down hunting hippos. With two packs of wild dogs in the area, it is probably Botswana's best hold for review of this rare creature. Finally, from June onwards buffalo and breeding herds of elephants frequent the reserve, drawn in by the water. Besides the large felines, more modest predators that may be experienced are side-striped jackals, bat-eared foxes and colonies of dwarf mongoose.

Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

The best time for game drives in Selinda Concession is in the months between July to October. These dry months bring thirsty crowds to the rivers and lagoons. Big herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest arrive at the permanent water sources when it gets really dry in June, and they usually stay until December.

Birds

Selinda offers amazing birding experiences. Birdlife includes carmine bee-eaters that have learned to follow game-drive vehicles to feed on the insects that fly up to avoid the wheels; a wonderful, colourful spectacle for the passengers. Raptors in the area are martial and fish eagles and bateleurs. Black and slaty egrets, wattled cranes and African skimmers are found here.

Best Time for Birding

Bird watching in Selinda Concession is astounding all year round. Genuine birders, in any case, should make the excursion here in the wet months, from November to April, as this is when summer migrants are seen in the concession. A significant number of the raptors are residents and can be seen consistently.
