- Day 3 - Full day Safari Blue Tour
You will be picked up from your resort at 8:00am for the renowned Safari Blue excursion. Known for being the original and the best, Safari Blue offers a full-day adventure aboard traditional locally-made sailing dhows, each between 8 to 10 meters in length and accommodating up to 22 passengers plus crew. These passenger dhows are equipped with outboard engines, marine VHF radios, inflatable gas life jackets, sunshades, boarding ladders, waterproof bags, and a first aid kit with a DAN oxygen unit.
The journey begins at the fishing village of Fumba, approximately a 30-minute drive from Stone Town. Situated in the southwest corner of the island, Fumba serves as an ideal launch point to explore Menai Bay, a designated Conservation Area. The bay is dotted with stunning, uninhabited islands and sandbanks, and is often visited by humpback and bottlenose dolphins. Upon arrival at Fumba, you will receive a briefing and a demonstration of how to use your lifejacket. You will then board the dhows and set sail to explore the bay while searching for dolphins. These majestic creatures have been sighted on at least 85% of the trips.
Later in the morning, you'll stop on a sandbank. Skilled guides will accompany you, leading safe snorkeling sessions and pointing out interesting sights. For beginners or those who are not confident swimmers, inflatable snorkeling vests are available, and guides can provide instruction. After snorkeling, enjoy a fresh green coconut before sailing to another sandbank for lunch. A catering boat has gone ahead earlier to prepare a delicious meal, which is served on teak picnic tables set beneath elegant canvas sunshades. The lunch features a traditional Zanzibari dish, followed by a tropical fruit tasting. Coffee and Amarula liqueur are offered post-meal, with cold drinks available throughout the day.
When the tide permits, visit a beautiful mangrove lagoon, where you can swim through the enchanting mangrove forest. The return journey to Fumba is by sailboat, arriving back around 6:00 PM in time to witness the vibrant African sunset.
Please note: There are no formal changing facilities at Fumba, so we recommend wearing your swimwear under your clothes. Bring waterproof shoes for boarding the dhows, as well as towels, sunscreen, and a spare T-shirt for snorkeling.
