This tour gives you an insight into Namibia’s main attractions, mainly the red sand dunes in Sossusvlei, the harsh Atlantic coast and Shipwrecks through the Skeleton Coast National Park, the semi-arid Damaraland, the Etosha National Park and one of the renowned conservation organization on a private game reserve, the AfriCat Foundation. We will spend more time at the coast, Damaraland and Etosha National Park. This implies that in Damaraland, we have a chance of tracking the infamous Desert Adapted Elephants in one of the 12 ephemeral rivers in Namibia. We will experience hands on conservation efforts on the Okonjima Private Game Reserve, which is home to the AfriCat Foundation and the latter is dedicated to the big carnivore conservation. We will get a chance to track one of the most elusive African carnivores, the African Leopard. The southern side of Namibia has a unique biome, different from most parts of the sub-region.

An early morning start will see us getting into the Namib Naukluft Park. Early morning light shining on the red sand dunes gives one great photographic opportunities and memories of the magnificent Namib Desert. The Namib Naukluft Park is the third largest National Park in Africa covering and area of 50 000 km2 . The Namib desert has been arid for about 80 million years, with true desert conditions predominating the last 15 to 20 million years. Various wildlife thriving in this area includes Gemsbok, Springbok, Brown Hyeana, Black-backed Jackal among others. If lucky you might see the only true Namibia Endemic bird, the Dune Lark among various birds in this area. We will visit the most photographed sand dune in the area, Dune 45. Depending on your energy levels, climbing one of the highest sand dune in the area, the Big Daddy, is quite fun. A visit to the Dead Vlei is worthwhile. This a white clay pan with dry Camel Thorn trees that are believed to have been dead 800 years ago. The area is so dry that the trees have not decomposed. After a visit to the Sossusvlei we will then visit the Sesriem Canyon. It is about kilometer long and 30 (100ft) meters deep and might have some water, quite important for animals to drink it. After lunch we will make our way to the Coast past scenic Gaub and Kuiseb passes. We will go past Walvis Bay Lagoon for some interesting water birds including Flamingoes. We will then overnight in Swakopmund and enjoy some dinner in some of the best restaurants.

We have options for this day. All activities are included and start in the morning after breakfast: 1) The Living Desert Tour This tour is done in the Dorob National Park, in the sand dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay towns. Dry bone, without a trace of moisture and as dry as a weathered bone! These terms may be used to describe this unique biome with sneaky creatures that have adapted to living in harsh environment. For these little creatures either camouflage or agility to faking deaths, helps in serving food on the table or avoid being someone’s meal somehow. This is a 4 to 5-hour tour conducted by passionate and experienced desert specialists who are desert conservationists as well. If lucky you might see the desert “Little Five”; Shovel-nosed Lizard, Namib Sand Gecko, Namaqua Chameleon, Namib Desert Sidewinding Adder and the Cartwheeling Spider (“Dancing White Lady”). Birds of interest include Gray’s Lark, Tractrac Chat, Damara Tern among others. You a should be back around lunch time and enjoy a stroll around the Swakopmund city or take any optional activities that we can arrange for you in advance. 2) Catamaran and Sandwich Harbour Combo. This takes the whole day and is done in Walvis Bay. Your guide will drive you to Waterfront in Walvis Bay after breakfast. You start with the Catamaran tour, and might get entertained by Cape Fur Seals and Pelicans on the cruise. Depending on the time of the year and luck one might encounter Whales, Dolphins, Leatherback turtle and Seals. After lunch you then proceed to the Sandwich Harbour, on an adventure 4 x 4 sand dune driving. This is one of the 5 RAMSAR sites (Wetlands of International Importance) where the dunes meet the sea. The coastal desert environment is characterized by pale sand dunes with traces of black shades of magnetite, implying they are of greater aesthetic value as well being a photographer’s playground. You might encounter Black-backed Jackal, Oryx, Springboks on your way in dry riverbeds. In the wetlands and mudflats there is great diversity of sea birds. After this busy day, your guide will pick you up to Swakopmund.

We will leave the Coastal environment, drive inland past a couple of Shipwrecks. This day we will visit the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. This is 60km2 Reserve and has the largest Seal Colony in the world, with numbers up to 240 000 at a given time. It could be the second largest city in Namibia if these animals were humans! After this activity, we will then go through the Skeleton Coast National Park. The Namibian Skeleton Coast National Park is renowned for its cold and unpredictable Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean that contends with the dune and desert landscape. It is described as the world’s largest ship cemetery because of various shipwrecks found along the coast. The Bushman called the coast “the land God made with anger” and early Portuguese explorers refer to it as “Gates of Hell”. However, the name Skeleton Coast refers to visible bones of whales that died when they get stranded on this coastline. This is a rarely visited park in Namibia with eye-catching landscapes that ranges from sweeping vistas of windswept smaller sand dunes, to rugged canyons with walls of richly coloured rocks and extensive mountain ranges. Wildlife here includes Oryx, Springbok, Black-backed Jackal, Ostrich, Brown Hyeana, Desert Adapted Elephant, Black Rhino and Lion. Because of the harshness of the area, these animals do not occur in huge numbers and not very easily spotted, so let’s keep our eyes peeled.

    NAMIBIAN TOURS

     1) DESERT DASH (3 Nights/ 4 Days)

The language of Waves, “Rest, Relax and Reflect”! “You need to lose yourself and disappear in the depths of the repetitions? Find a                         coast and watch the repetitive waves! Soon your mind vanishes away and when your mind disappears you disappear!” Before we get                       to the Namibian Coast, let us explore the oldest desert in the world (55 million years), with reddish/orange sand dunes estimated to be                     5 million years old! Our Desert Dash Tour is short, during a period of 4 days, one will get a chance to get a hang of the Namib Desert.

    2) ETOSHA DASH (3 Nights/ 4 Days)

This short tour gives one an insight into Namibia’s renowned National Park, the Etosha. It is a 22 270 km2 park with 114 mammal                             species and over 350 bird species. Mammals include Black and White Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, African Elephant, Plains and Hartmann's Mountain Zebras, Southern Giraffe subs. angolensis, Eland, Gemsbok, African Wild Cat, Spotted and Brown Hyaena among other animals. It is quite unique in its own way as the concentration and diversity around waterholes in the dry season in magnificent, giving one a chance to see animal dramas unfolding as they make turns to quench their thirst. For birders, this 3-day tour may yield over 200 species on your list depending on the season.

    3) NAMIBIAN HIGHLIGHTS (9 Nights/ 10 Days)

This tour gives you an insight into Namibia’s main attractions, mainly the sand dunes, the coast, semi-arid Damaraland, Etosha National Park and one of the renowned conservation organization on a private game reserve, the AfriCat Foundation. The southern side of Namibia has a unique biome, different from most parts of the sub-region.

    4) WILD WEST NAMIBIA EXPEDITION (13 Nights/ 14 Days)

This is one of Africa’s true remaining wildernesses. It is the least populated part of Namibia with a density of one person per every 2 km2. It is less visited by tourists and is home to several desert adapted wildlife. During this 13-day adventure tour we will explore Namibia’s ephemeral rivers; Ugab, Huab, Aba-Haub, Uniab, Hoanib, Hoarusib.  These are important for the survival of Desert Adapted Elephants, Black Rhino, Oryx, Springboks, Desert Adapted Lion, cheetah, leopard, and other animals. Special birds that are mostly near endemic to Namibia include White-tailed Shrike, Benguela Long-billed Lark, Monteiro’s Hornbill, Damara Red-billed Hornbill, Bare-cheeked Babbler, Violet Wood hoopoe, Ruppel’s Korhaan, Ruppel’s Parrot, Ludwig’s Bustard among others. We will do the OvaHimba cultural tour. A visit to the Epupa Falls and a drive along the Kunene drive is worthwhile. Birds of interest around this area include Rufous Palm-Thrush, elusive Grey Kestrel and Cinderella Waxbill. Afternoon boat cruise along in the Kunene River is a good way of waving a goodbye to the Kaokoland before we explore another less visited part of Etosha National Park: the northwestern part.

    BEYOND NAMIBIAN BORDERS

    1) DESERT TO WETLANDS (20 Nights/ 21 Days)

This itinerary is for individuals with more vacation days or time. It covers three countries viz. Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. We spend more time in Namibia mainly because of the variation in landscape and wildlife to be seen. Northeastern Namibia, Chobe (Botswana) and Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) is a homogeneous habitat but slightly different in terms of activities offered. Because of the different habitats, activities, people and cultures, in a period of 3 weeks, one feels like you have been away from home for 3 months! The Kalahari is a semi-arid savannah environment with very small red sand dunes and vegetated, Fish River is much more dry, mountainous and very rocky and Sossusvlei has very high red sand dunes. The Namib Desert represents a true desert with less precipitation and unique flora and fauna. We will get a taste of the Skeleton Coast National Park. We will still experience dry conditions around Twyfelfontein area but changes immediately after an hour drive to little more vegetation. Etosha is one of the renowned national parks in Namibia and game drives are more in wide open gravel roads around waterholes. As we proceed more northeastern, perennial river system start to appear and more vegetation. Games drives here are more on little tracks, sandy and sometimes require heavy 4 x 4 driving. Herds of game tend to be bigger, water antelopes and birds implies more species to tick off your list. Boat Cruises, optional helicopter flights and White-water rafting can entice this ultimate trip throughout Southern Africa. We will cover 10 different national parks in 3 countries, each of them unique and special in its own way.

    2) ULTIMATE NORTHEAST NAMIBIA (11 Nights/12 Days)

The northeastern corner of Namibia is time consuming, and even difficult to visit but offers a fascinating wilderness experience those who are well prepared and make time to reach it. This 12-day tour encompasses wildlife, scenery and culture in one of the less visited part of Namibia. The main aim is to explore the Khaudum National Park, one of the very wild parks in the country. Due to the sandy terrain in this untouched wilderness, we need a minimum of two 4x4 vehicles, hence minimum of 6 people to explore the area. We will visit the San people, who are renowned for being Southern Africa’s earliest ancestors and experience their vanishing way of life. We will have a day of wild camping as there is no accommodation option in northern Khaudum. We will then proceed to the Zambezi region and explore a series of national parks up to Botswana and the end our tour at the mighty Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

    SPECIALISED TOURS

    1)CONSERVATION SAFARI

Namibia was the first country in the world to include environmental protection in its constitution. Approximately 17% of its surface area is protected either as a national park, game reserve, conservancy exceeding the 10% prescribed by IUCN. The Marine Protected Area stretches 400km along the coast and 30km offshore. Protection of the Black Rhino in western arid regions has resulted in Namibia being one of the few countries in Africa with growing populations within as well as outside national parks.  In private sector, several Non-Governmental Organisations assist the government in conservation and development.  These include the Namibia Nature Foundation, Save the Rhino Trust, Cheetah Conservation Fund, AfriCat Foundation and the Namibian Association of Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Support Organisations (15 NGOs and University of Namibia). A total of 161 private game reserves are registered with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. During this 15-day tour we will be visiting some of the prime conservation areas, including game reserves and Organisations, getting to experience some conservation work while enjoying wildlife and scenery.

    2)CUSTOMIZED BIRDING SAFARI

Much of Namibia’s surface area is arid and birds in these dry areas have restricted distribution. The diversity of birds increases as one move towards either northeast or northwest of the country. Around September and October, the Palearctic migrants appear and remain until around April or May. Intra-African migrants are also around this time of the year. The coastal wetlands receive visits from various migrating species, as well as seabird species that are not normally seen inland of southern Africa. In essence, tours including the coast, as well as the country’s interior and riverine borders, make Namibia and excellent destination for birders. Select any one of our tours on a private basis and enjoy birding with our local birding guide, or alternatively talk to our safari consultants to put up a customized birding itinerary for you.

Founded in 1993, the AfriCat Foundation is primarily dedicated to conservation of large carnivores. The Foundation lies on a 22000 hectare Okonjima Private Game Reserve. Before lunch, you will visit the center and learn more about Namibia’s carnivores and their fight for survival and the Human-Wildlife Conflict challenges that face both man and carnivore. Both Okonjima and AfriCat are dedicated to creating conservation awareness through environmental education at all ages and levels, rehabilitation and reintroduction programmes, and conducts constructive wildlife research. Getting There

The majority of international visitors arrive at Windhoek's international airport, Hosea Kutako, via Johannesburg, South Africa, or Frankfurt, Germany. You can self-drive or take a bus from Botswana, Zambia, or South Africa if you are already in the region.
Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) is Namibia's main airport, located 40 kilometres/25 miles east of the capital, Windhoek. Travel to the next destination is by small plane or car. Many people prefer self-drive because of Namibia's excellent roads and safety. In most cases, your local tour operator will arrange airport pickup and all additional transportation as part of the tour.

Yes, a transfer from and back to the airport is included
