Saturday Desert Camp, Sossusvlei – Desert Camp – 120 km

Today, we rise early to witness the stunning sunrise in the dunes. The best time for photography is at sunrise and sunset when the sand dunes radiate vibrant shades of orange and red. Departing from Sesriem, we quickly cover the 60 km to the 2x4 car park where we park our two-wheel-drive vehicles. From there, we venture into the ancient Tsauchab River-bed for the final 5 km to Sossusvlei. The Tsauchab River is seasonal, flowing only during periods of sufficient rain. Over time, the riverbeds became filled with wind-blown sand, restricting the flow. While Sossusvlei occasionally experiences flooding after heavy rains, it can no longer reach the Atlantic Ocean due to the sand barriers created by the wind. At Sossusvlei, we explore the striking Dead Vlei, a pan surrounded by dunes adorned with the skeletal remains of camelthorn trees. Afterward, we return the same way, stopping at the famous Dune 45 for those with energy to climb or for a relaxing break at its base. On our way back to Sesriem, we make a short detour to visit the Sesriem Canyon, which was carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years. In the late afternoon, we return to Desert Camp, concluding our day's adventures.
