The Machame route, also known as the 'whiskey' route due to its perceived difficulty, presents a challenging yet rewarding journey for climbers, contrasting with the comparatively easier Marangu route, dubbed the 'Coca-Cola' route. Popular among both seasoned climbers and beginners, the Machame route offers excellent acclimatization opportunities, increasing the likelihood of summit success. Beginning from the southern side, this route approaches the summit from the southwest, treating trekkers to breathtaking vistas of the Barranco wall and Maasai Mara plain while traversing the Shira plateau and lava tower. Typically completed in six days (with five nights spent on the mountain), the Machame route can also be extended to seven days (with six nights), allowing for a more gradual altitude adjustment and thus enhancing the chances of reaching the summit. With a distance of approximately 62 km (37 miles) from gate to gate, the seven-day itinerary boasts a significantly higher success rate. Although it's recommended for physically fit individuals with some hiking experience, many first-time trekkers opt for this route and they often do fare well.
