- Day - Itinerary for a Day Trip Safari to Ngorongoro Crater from Ar5:00 AM – Departure from Arusha: Pickup from your hotel: Start early in the morning, as the drive to Ngorongoro Crater takes around 3 to 4 hours. Drive to Ngorongoro Crater: The journey from Arusha to the Ngorongoro Crater involves a scenic drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the way, you’ll pass through rural villages and beautiful landscapes, offering a glimpse of Tanzania’s highlands and farms. 8:30 AM – Arrive at Ngorongoro Crater: Ngorongoro Conservation Area Entrance: Once you arrive, you will enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and stop for a short briefing at the gate. Entrance fees are typically paid at this point. Meet your guide: If you're part of a group tour, you will meet your safari guide who will provide information about the park and its wildlife. 9:00 AM – Descend into the Crater: Descend to the Crater Floor: You’ll descend about 600 meters into the crater, where you’ll experience the unique landscape. The crater floor is home to abundant wildlife, including lions, elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo, along with many bird species. Game Drive: The game drive will take about 3 to 4 hours, and your guide will help you spot wildlife and provide insights into the ecosystem. The flat terrain inside the crater makes it easy to see animals from a distance, and the concentration of wildlife in the crater is one of the highest in Africa. 12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch: Lunch in the Crater: Many tours offer a picnic lunch within the crater, either in a designated area or at a viewpoint, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while relaxing. Some tours also offer the option to return to a nearby lodge for lunch. 1:30 PM – Continue Game Drive: Afternoon Safari: After lunch, you’ll continue your game drive within the crater. Ngorongoro is famous for its high concentration of animals, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), so chances of spotting these animals are high. Bird Watching: The crater is also home to over 500 species of birds, including flamingos around the crater's soda lakes, raptors, and waterfowl. 3:30 PM – Ascend from the Crater: Leave the Crater Floor: After a thrilling afternoon of wildlife watching, you’ll start your ascent out of the crater and head back to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area’s rim. Brief Stop at the Crater Viewpoint: On your way out, you may stop at the Ngorongoro Crater Viewpoint to capture panoramic views of the entire crater from above. 6:00 PM – Return to Arusha: Drive Back to Arusha: After an exhilarating day of safari, you’ll begin the journey back to Arusha. You’ll arrive in the evening (around 6:00 PM) depending on traffic and road conditions.
