Kilwa Masoko is a town in Tanzania that is home to the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara. These are the remains of two ports that had an important position in East African trade between the 13th and 16th centuries1. Kilwa Kisiwani is an Islamic community on an island off the coast of East Africa. In the 9th century it was sold to a trader and over the following centuries, it grew to be a major center of trade with the Indian Ocean world1. The ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani include the Great Mosque, the palace Husuni Kubwa with its large octagonal swimming pool, smaller mosques, the Gereza (prison) and an urban complex2. Songo Mnara is located on a small island about 15 km north of Kilwa Kisiwani.
