The park is home to diverse wildlife, including lions, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and more. During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for wildlife, attracting large numbers of animals in search of water. Upon arrival, you will notice the unique diversity of landscapes in the park, ranging from dense forests to a soda lake that shimmers pink from the thousands of flamingos that gather there. Lake Manyara is known for its famous tree-climbing lions, which are often seen lounging in the branches of acacia trees. In addition to lions, the park is home to large herds of elephants, hippos, and many species of primates, including baboons and blue monkeys. The drive will take you through the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering stunning views of the rolling highlands before descending into the vast plains. Arriving in Ndutu by the afternoon, you’ll embark on your first game drive in the region. The open plains are teeming with wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and other herbivores, which in turn attract predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. In these months, the Ndutu plains are also the site of calving season, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth, making for spectacular wildlife action. This region is a key part of the Great Migration route, a wildlife spectacle where over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, traverse the Serengeti in search of fresh grazing lands. Calving season takes place between January and March, and you'll have the chance to witness the heartwarming and dramatic moments as newborn wildebeest take their first steps, while predators like lions, cheetahs, and hyenas wait to pounce on vulnerable prey. Game drives in Ndutu offer some of the best wildlife viewing experiences as you’ll often be surrounded by vast herds and see predator-prey interactions in real-time. In particular, Ndutu is one of the best places in Africa to see cheetahs in action, as they roam the open plains hunting gazelles. Your expert guide will help you follow the movements of these predators, whether lounging under trees or stalking prey through the tall grass. The wide-open landscape provides fantastic photographic opportunities, especially during the golden hours of early morning and late afternoon when the light is perfect. Descend 600 meters into the crater floor, which is home to over 25,000 large animals, including elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, and leopards. The crater provides excellent opportunities to see the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino – in a single day. The crater's soda lake, Lake Magadi, attracts flocks of flamingos, while the Lerai Forest provides a habitat for elephants and monkeys.
