The 6-Day Machame Route, also known as “the Whiskey Route,” is Kilimanjaro’s second-most popular trail, offering diverse landscapes and unforgettable experiences. The trek begins at Machame Gate on the mountain’s southern slope and gradually ascends through tropical rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the Arctic summit zone. Camps along the route provide comfortable rest and support gradual acclimatization. On day three, the route merges with the Lemosho and Umbwe trails at Barranco Camp. Upon arrival in Tanzania, you’ll be met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel. Your experienced guide will provide a thorough briefing on the trek, check your equipment, and ensure everything is ready. You’ll then rest overnight at the hotel before beginning the adventure. Meals included: breakfast and dinner.

The final day features a pleasant three-hour walk through the lush Mweka montane forest to Mweka Gate. Here, you complete the required park formalities and receive your summit certificates, a proud reminder of your achievement. Afterward, your vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Moshi, where a warm shower and well-earned celebration mark the successful end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel around 8:00 a.m. and driven to Machame Gate, passing lush Chagga coffee and banana plantations along the way. At the gate, you’ll complete park registration and other formalities before starting your trek. The first day follows a scenic path through tropical rainforest, offering glimpses of local flora and wildlife, before arriving at Machame Camp (2,835 m). A picnic lunch will be enjoyed en route, and the day concludes with an overnight stay at Machame Camp.

Starting around 8:00 a.m., the trek begins with an hour-long climb through dense forest until reaching the forest edge, followed by another hour on a gentler slope through the moorland zone. After a short snack and rest, the trail ascends a rocky ridge toward Shira Plateau. From here, stunning views unfold to the east, including the glaciers of the Western Breach. The day concludes with an overnight stay at Shira Camp (3,750 m), surrounded by the high-altitude plateau’s serene landscape.

To aid acclimatization, we’ll follow a “climb high, sleep low” approach. The trek ascends into the alpine desert to Lava Tower (4,600 m), then descends over about three hours to Barranco Camp (3,900 m). Along the way, you’ll have excellent opportunities to photograph the dramatic Western Breach and Barranco Wall. Barranco Camp is nestled in a valley below the towering wall, offering a stunning sunset view while you relax and await dinner. Overnight is spent at Barranco Camp (3,900 m).

- Day 4 - Barranco Camp (3900m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)

The journey continues as we depart Barranco Camp, an area well known for its giant groundsels. The day begins with the ascent of the impressive Barranco Wall, a natural divide between Barranco Valley and the southern slopes of Kibo. Although the climb involves scrambling over rocks and is not technical, it is long and physically demanding. After reaching the top, the trail leads to Karanga Camp, where lunch is served and water is replenished for the final ascent. The trek then continues through the stark alpine desert toward Barafu Camp (4,640 m), your base camp for the summit attempt.

- Day 5 - Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) then down to Mweka

You will be awakened around midnight, when light tea and biscuits will be served to prepare you for the summit attempt. The climb begins with a steady ascent over scree slopes, lasting approximately four to five hours and gaining significant altitude in a short distance. As dawn approaches, you reach Stella Point (5,756 m) just as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the horizon, offering truly spectacular views. After about one more hour, you arrive at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, where you pause briefly for photographs. You then descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for dinner and an overnight stay.
