Ponta do Ouro is a popular tourist destination in Mozambique known for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and vibrant marine life. While it may not be as well-known for safari tourism as other African destinations, there are still plenty of opportunities to explore the country's wildlife in the nearby nature reserves and parks.
Some of the popular wildlife reserves and parks near Ponta do Ouro include:
- Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve - located just offshore, this marine reserve offers snorkelling and diving opportunities to see a variety of marine life, including dolphins, sharks, and sea turtles.
- Maputo Elephant Reserve - located about 2 hours from Ponta do Ouro, this reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species.
- Tembe Elephant Park - located across the border in South Africa, this park is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, as well as other wildlife such as lions, rhinos, and buffalo.

May to October (Dry Season)
- Less vegetation and animals concentrate around water, making them easier to spot
- The skies are clear, rain is rare, and there are fewer mosquitoes
- Even though most tourists visit during the Dry season, the parks still feel uncrowded, except for the bustling Chobe riverfront area
- Early morning and evening drives are cold in June, July and August
